Educational Enhancement through Academic Competition (EEAC)
The University Community Service Center recently partnered with two organizations that share
the common goal of enriching the lives of South Side middle schoolers through rigorous academic
competition.
Chicago Academic Games League is a Hyde Park/Kenwood based organization that has been
in existence for over 25 years. Through weekly math club meetings at local schools and monthly math
competitions, CAGL encourages young people to practice logical thinking, math skills, pride in
academic achievement, and sportsmanship.
The South Shore Urban Debate Project is a highly successful one-year-old organization started
by a University student. Currently affiliated with eight South Side middle schools, the SSUDP utilizes
university and law students with debate experience to train 5th – 7th graders in study skills, argument,
policy analysis, and formal debate structure. Training culminates with an interschool debate competition
in late March.
Both organizations further the University Community Service Center’s goals of fostering University-Community
partnership and enriching the academic lives of Chicago students.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
As a Student, Faculty or Staff member:
Weekly, monthly, and one time service opportunities are available to tutor students or staff/judge competitions. Anyone, but particularly those with debate or academic team experience, can make a big difference in the lives of these young people.
As a Community Partner (particularly schools): Both programs are accepting applications from middle schools to participate in programming throughout the year. Additional volunteers and logistical support are always welcome.
