CAPS Services and Metcalf Internships
Career Advising and Planning Services has a number of resources for summer jobs and internships; visit their
Internship Resources Page for information.
The Jeff Metcalf Fellows Program provides
paid internships exclusively to students in the College at the University of Chicago. Opportunities may vary
slightly each year, internships are available throughout the United States and other
countries with opportunities offered in a wide variety of fields, including: Arts & Culture, Government & Public
Policy, International, Research and Education, and Social Change.
The Brown Service Learning Award and Richter Fund Grants
The Brown Service Learning Award (application deadline, February 15) was established in 1995 to provide students in the College with the financial
means to pursue a service-learning project that otherwise would not have been possible for them. The project need
not be completely volunteer -- that is, the Brown award may be given to a student whose work already receives a small
stipend. The Richter Fund supports: research under the guidance of faculty and unfunded, or under-funded internships
with not-for-profit organizations. For both awards, the maximum award is $1,000. For more information, read the
appropriate application guidelines and complete the application form by the deadline. These documents are available
on the Fellowships, Research Opportunities, and Grants downloads page.
Summer Work-Study
Students who are eligible for Summer Work-Study can utilize their award working with off-campus nonprofit organizations
in the Chicago area. Contact David Hays for more information or to explore different options.
Please note: You must apply for Summer Work-Study separately from your regular academic year financial aid application. Check with your financial aid office about applying for Summer Work-Study.

Summer Volunteer Opportunities
The University Community Service Center has contacts at hundreds of organizations constantly in need of student
volunteers! You can volunteer full-time, or students may choose to work in Chicago over the summer to support
themselves, and can set aside one day a week to volunteer with an organization that meets their passion and interests.
Devoting a full day to volunteer work gives students a similar experience to a summer internship, while allowing for
the flexibility to hold down a job to support themselves. Contact UCSC for more information about organizations
in need of summer volunteers.
Paid Summer Positions
The most likely way to paid work while performing service during the summer is to work with children and youth. Youth summer camps, park districts, YMCAs, summer school programs, youth outreach organizations and similar organizations begin looking for summer staff in the late winter.
Internships/Research Opportunities
There are many non-profit organizations that are looking for full or part time summer interns. Though most positions are on a volunteer basis, some organizations may provide small stipends or have work study funds available. Contact UCSC for more information about possible summer volunteer internship or research projects.
